thats the image I was refering to ... so where does the CD go in?

Looks like a caddy mechanism. (Edit: Oh wait, you were probably talking about the stand-alone system and not the add-on. In that case, nevermind.)

Also, everyone always claims that the CD-i was Philips' aborted fetus of the SNES CD, but this really wasn't the case. Philips (ironically, along with Sony) developed the CD-i disc standard in the mid 1980's, and already had working prototypes of a player by 1988, before the SNES was even released. Some of the history is a little vague, and it's difficult to tell what influence (if any) the SNES CD project had on the CD-i, but it doesn't seem like a whole lot, as the hardware in the CD-i is very different from the SNES.

Yes its a playstation 1 dev controller, but no evidence anywhere that the snes-cd would use it.

Think about it, why would nintendo create a new controller for a addon?
Hey dude, I'm right there with you.  Hell, I wouldn't pay $50 for that.

I just figured I'd post it in case someone else was interested.

I know Secret of Mana made by Square was going to be for the SNES CD. Square was upset because they put all that time and effort into programing a game for it and then the CD got canceled. They cut back on the game and released it on a cartridge for the SNES. I am curious to know what they cut out of the game.

100% true, to bad I don't think we will ever the original content know.  Sadly It'd probably be easier to learn Japanese and play the super famicon game (IIRC it has the original content - unchanged)

Still a great game though.

As for the prototype, someone actually bid 800 and it didn't meet reserve? Are these prototypes that expensive? or more so rare?

This is why there are licenced Nintendo games on the CDI.

Philips continued to make the CDI sony created the Playstation.
As far as I know no known prototype ever showed up on the grey market.

The controller showed in the auction is a playstation prototype, my guess is just after nintendo and sony broke the contract. ]]>
