This is a prototype. He eventually built it into the AVS.

First homebrew cart release was even a couple years earlier! I'm about to release a game that has music dating back to like 1998, so it's been going on for a long time. Chinese companies have also filled the gap between then and now, though usually with Famicom games. A long and rich history for sure.
