Just wanted to mention - some games seem to have a score but it's used as in-game currency (Conquest of the Crystal Palace is an example). If you buy items at a shop, you monetary "score" goes down. So that'd need to be considered for a score competion - the game would either have to A) be deemed inappropriate for competition, B) have a rule to account for it such as "no buying items allowed", or C) laisez-faire... those of lesser skill who need to buy items to progress will just have to suffer the hit to their score.
Also, some games with a monetary system might require that you spend money in order to progress. I think (can't remember for sure) that Ducktales is like this. Don't you need to pay someone 300k monies to advance in the amazon? if so, it would be unfair if someone died prior to that point with a score of 299k, whereas another player (who arguably played a better game) dies just after paying the fee, and ends with a score of 1k?
Some other games, like Fantasy Zone for instance, avoid this by having both a $amount and a score, which increment upwards at the same rate, but the score never decreases while the $ does after purchases.
