You would get the shooter icon even if bertsampson finishes ahead of you because he already won it. Anybody that wins a first half genre icon isn't eligible to win the same one twice.

This was a pretty significant update for me. I decided to play through the whole game until completion, then go back and try for points. This definitely helped me to "toughen up" and get used to a higher degree of difficulty. This was my third attempt after the full play through.
