As far as the special attack goes,it's weird. I just put my thumb over both buttons. Seems to work fine. If you can master that technique this game becomes way easier and sustain a lot less damage.
There has to be something else to actually executing the special attack than A + B, since just for grins I mapped both buttons to a single keyboard input and it didn't execute.

Yes, you have to hit jump first.... it's crucial. Quickly roll your fingers from jump to attack or use two fingers and hit jump a split second before attack. Think of it as a drop kick as soon as you leave the ground.  ]]>

Yeah, when I play with my thumb over both buttons I don't exactly push the buttons at the same time. It's more like one immediately after the other. ]]>

The liquid nitrogen sprayers,I jump in a zig zag pattern as soon as I start seeing the first one come out.

Ice Rocks - no real tip here actually!  I just pushed through as fast as I could.

When I knew the Ice Rocks were coming, I jump-kicked my way to the upper right corner of the screen.  If you stay up in there you'll usually not get hit at all by them.  I found that out last year and ended up not taking a single hit from those rocks during this contest.

I wanted to give this one a go, cause I've been quite accustomed to it by playing it in the a tournament last year, but for some odd reason, my emu on my DS was loading TMNT II uncorrectly, the characters were invisible...

Nice job everyone! ]]>

Off the top of my head, the one that drives me nuts is the falling ice balls in the snow level. Also the bouncing snowmen with rocket noses. You pretty much can't avoid losing life on those 2 parts. At least I can't.

Are you kidding me? The worst parts by FAR are those snow tractor thigs in level 4, and the stupid freeze rays inside the technodrone! I f#%king HATE those ice spewing s.o.b.'s! Oh, and their cousins, the bamboo poles in the dojo! Unavoidable hazards = cheap ass tricks.
Some pointers (and non-pointers!) for dealing with some of these hazards mentioned:

Ice Rocks - no real tip here actually!  I just pushed through as fast as I could.

Snow Tractors - these are super easy to avoid IF you know when they are coming ... just hang out at the top of the screen and they don't touch you.  And you know they are coming when you get to a completely blank area (I'm pretty sure that is some kind of programming trick to make the truck scroll)

Snowmen - just pin them up against the edge of the screen.  Smack the rockets when you can or just jump over them. I jumped over them but admittedly that's a poor strategy.

Bamboo Poles - these things are terrible and I have no consistent way to get through.  I mostly just kept jumping and moving forward as fast as I could.

Freeze Rays - I almost always end up getting hit by the first one since I forget when they show up.  =)  After that though just move forward in diagonals and keep jumping.

LOL, you are much better than me at the game. I almost never played this game on single player, so we just ran up and bashed the enemies as a kid. There wasn't much strategy, avoiding damage, or finding enemy patterns. So, I don't have much experience past the Snow Level.

I remember beating it as a kid, but we must have used continues and a lives-code or something, because I only managed to get to Tora on my first continue.  (also, with two players I remember the bosses being easier since you could take turns distracting/attacking)
