I think I said this before, but that is one of the few protos you have that I would like to play. Ever think of making repros of it? I would purchase one.

Funny you should ask...

Matt and I at one point went as far as:

- Burning 100 sets of EPROMs for this
- Making label and box art
- Producing 30 or so copies

This was right around the time that Ecstasy of Order was being produced. When we heard how Bunnyboy was treated when he tried to make a competition cart for the movie by the people who owned the rights to Tetris, we scrapped the whole thing and any future plans on releasing it on a cart. This is very, very active license and is one of the few situations that I could see us actually going to court over this sort of thing.

Yikes!!! That is too bad, but I can definitely see why you guys wouldn't want to take any chances with it!

So it is legit? I seriously have no clue.

If you ask me, all we can do is confirm it legit, or make an assumption that it is not. If the game has data that varies from the retail version (and does not appear to be caused by a bad dump or bit rot), I could only assume it is legit. If it has retail data, it may or may not be a proto as many protos exist with retail code on them.

Based on having it in my hands and the apparent age of the stickers on the EPROMs, I would be shocked to find out that this wasn't a proto. No conclusive evidence, but if I bought it after it were advertised as a proto, I'd be very happy about it.

I sent the ROM over to Divingninja and the game is on the way back to him now, hopefully he can take a peak at the ROMs and see what he comes up with.

Dream: Thanks for the info! I had a hunch this was the case just based on the sheer number of proto EPROMs I've had come my way, but it's nice to have confirmation.

Games back then were not developed like they are today where they do that and they can't screw up, they worked on it in house, probably had some people working on the idea, one the mechanics, one the actual game engine, one on sound. What you got is what you got. They didn't give out ROM's to people to go test and make sure they worked, they tested as they went and made sure it was right first time. The best you got from there was prototype carts made for people or that were abandoned. I mean think about it, you don't have a group of people working on 3 games at once back then. 3 group of ROM's for a tester? Yeah right. I think you can't see it that this is such a shot in the dark of what you just said and wouldn't be common at all back then if it ever even happened a single time. And besides, 3 games that all use the same mapper too? Yeah, sureeee.

So what's the results of the dump and compare of the binaries?Sorry man, you're 100% wrong on this. Companies that sent stuff to magazines sometimes only had one "flash" cart as you put it lying around and sent new EPROMS for different games sometimes....(obviously they would need the same mapper but this did happen sometimes) heck, there was a pile of chips in a drawer at VG&CE from this whole type of thing. More prevalent with SNES stuff but it happened with NES stuff and this isn't even "development" we are talking about, it's about sending stuff to a publication. ]]>

Is that proto version of Tetris publicly released. The Tengen version was always my favourite version of Tetris. It always seemed to be on the pirated multicarts.

It's one of the very few I don't plan on releasing publicly. This one will have to be purchased to be played. Shitty, I know, but just this one stays with us.
