Holy shit. I still have my HeroQuest game from my childhood. Awesome.

The boardgame is expensive man. Over $100 easy for a complete copy
I've got a partial copy, think anyone would be interested in the parts?

I just sold a partial copy to a local store for $65. he tried to give me $5 for it, but I told him that I know it's worth over $100 so he threw me $65.

This is a prototype ROM played on a modified cart (I think it was California Games) to play on my NES console. Being that this is a prototype, it does have some glitches in it.developed by Gremlin Graphics and published by Hasbro Interactive, which was cancelled before it was released.

Enjoy the video

That's probably because your cart uses the super broken work-in-progress NTSC version we extracted from the source code years and years ago. The PAL version we later found on a cart does not have these same glitches. Both should be available in your ROM set of choice.

I'm not trying to poke a bear here, but can you provide further details on this? I find this pretty intriguing.
I guess I'll have to watch his video.

Sure, what kind of details are you asking about?

Sometime around 2000 or 2001, programmer Chris Shrigley kindly provided the source code for Hero Quest to me for my old website. He believed it to be final, and it very well could be, but without the original compiler there's no way to get that final code playable. There were some early binary files in the source, however, which we converted into an iNES ROM and released. If your copy is super buggy, it's this version.

Years later (2006? 2007?) Lost Levels acquired a physical review cartridge of a PAL version of the game, which is significantly less buggy and very possibly complete. However, the music is sped up to accomodate for PAL signal timing, so it's not ideal on an NTSC setup.

I suspect that if you were to replace the PAL version's music with the NTSC version's, you'd more or less have a complete NTSC version of the game.

Referencing to the recent Hero Quest protos that sold on eBay. Would you believe there to be any differences from the one that's currently used on reproduction carts? I couldn't tell any differences from the screenshots and I don't know much about the origins of those prototypes.

UK label has the exact same date as the dumped one. No dumps of a German version that I know of?

This might sound dumb, but is this ROM available? I don't think I would've ever put it together that this is the same thing as my old board game, so even if I'd seen it, I might've overlooked it. Or is this a recent proto find?
It's one of the earlier prototype dumps from back when reproductions were "new" (think 2001 - 2005 timeframe)

This one, California Raisins, and a few others were popular at the time.

Yes, people are shopping for parts all the time.

Same goes for Warhammer Quest, Space Crusade, and Space Hulk.

I don't see why not. I'm sure there are plenty of people missing little bits and pieces. ]]>
