I always think about how the newer games usually introduce you what buttons do what (which makes it somewhat easier). This video shows that in older games, you don't have that luxury and figure out how to play by doing.  I got her a Winnie the Pooh stuffed bear, which she really likes.

I set this up for some relatives who were in town to play with, but when I was testing it out she came up and asked me what I was doing ("What do?").  I told her "Mario" and showed her that he jumps when you push a button, so of course she wanted to do that too. 

After some practce we almost got through the 1st level together (me on the dpad, and she would jump when I told her to) but for now mostly she just likes to move Mario around and make him jump and throw fireballs.
