If a person makes a 1:1 label and eventually sells the cart down the road for whatever reason, I think the best option is to rip the label off the cart so it will have a lesser chance of being picked up and flipped for a legitament copy to some unlucky buyer.

Just my two cents, I personally won't put another label on a damaged cart since I don't like them to begin with in my own collection. And if the cart is damaged, it's no part of my collection ]]>

Actually I don't think collectors are ruining the hobby, and I don't think gamers are ruining the hobby. I think petty useless arguments over who hoardes the most toys for the more righteous reasons are what ruins a hobby. I get so fucking tired of this collectors vs. gamers bullshit. What does it matter, precisely? We're all adults with rooms filled with way too many toys. It's not life or death or any issue of any import. It's a hobby. have fun with it. Enjoy it your own way and let others enjoy it their way. God damn.

I lol'ed so hard at this, Nate.
Good point though SP. Exactly the rationale why i sold most of my boxes to pay for some guitar gear.... i can play carts and guitars, i can't play nintendo cardboard boxes the same way.

The point isn't whether or not people who are out to scam are going to figure out ways to do it, because they are, there is no argument to be had.

The discussion is whether or not you are a fan. It it breaks down to those who can't afford/don't want to spend money on games like the fakes, and those who already have spent money or like the high end collectible nature of the current state of retro gaming don't like fakes than so be it.

Anyway I am bored of this, I will catch you guys again next week when this comes up again.
It's a fun discussion though, why leave??

I don't know it's being a fan as much as it being a matter of convinence. I'll buy to upgrade a cartridge and sell my duplicate in lesser condition; I say if somebody would rather blow money on a repair job that's their call.

Ah, this next one is an open topic for anybody: What about pokemon? How many pokemon titles for the GB and GBA have been pirated, YET the value of the games is still there, as well as a strong disdain for shoddy knock-offs. GO! ]]>

Anything deemed as an antique has been reproduced. The fact is, this IS going to happen one way or another and I'm really surprised with the tech available that it hasn't been a bigger issue already. If ya want to see rare, collectible games... wait till they are repro'd full on to an exact tee. Then people who can tell the difference will have something going. Peeps buy all sorts of collectibles across the board on the gamble if it is authentic or not, from coins, to firearms, furniture or art. It isn't a matter of IF it will happen, just a question of when.

I can already see a version of 'Antiques Roadshow' popping up only people bringing in their video games to see if they're legit or not. ]]>

Personally I think if someone out there can reproduce a label exactly in every detail, same material used for the originals, same glossiness, same ink and resolution, size and whatnot, everything perfect, can't tell the difference, I'm all for it. Just too many games out there that look like shit. I love playing the games moreso than anything, but also if I'm going to spend money on anything I want it to look nice too. And I don't want something that says repro on it, not if I (nor anyone else) could tell the difference otherwise. I could care less about all the greedy jerks out there that would use it for personal financial gain, that's their business, its only like this because too many let it get this way by putting so much dollar sign value on it all. I get games, fill up a collection to enjoy playing them, but again when not playing I'd like to look upon a nice display, not a bunch of torn labels, and beat up carts with writing all over them. And if for some reason I don't want a game any longer, I resell it at a decent price so that I can get something else that I may like or play more. I don't have any games (that I know of) that have repro labels on them, and if I did, I don't care, because I certainly wouldn't know it, so no big deal. Same thing for boxes and manuals, if someone could recreate them exactly in every way, I'm good with that. Just sucks that the big game companies themselves don't do it, they could certainly gain from it, people send in their old NES, SNES, GB, and N64 games, Nintendo gives 'em new shell and/or labels, more money in their pockets (at least for those games they own the rights to).

That's an interesting position. I thought of that regarding stupid things like the plastic baggies and styro inserts. Those are (in theory) easy to be reproduced, and used to turn a CIB into a "true" CIB... and I think no one would really care if they're the real thing or not. Like if we were going to notice 80's styrofoam from 2010's.

If someone can make truly exact reproduction labels of grials (for commons it's just not worth it), it would suck for the owners of mint originals, as it'd bring down prices like crazy... but from the perspective of new collectors it could be something good. Unless you count the "thrill of the hunt", that would go down at least for those few games.

I don't know if games should be more like comics and trading cards (were restoration brings down the price always), or more like antique artifacts and toys, where professional restoration (respecting the use of original materials, colors, etc) will add up to the value.

If I was given the choice between a fucked up Stadium Events, and a completely and profesionally restored one, I'd go for the latter, but only if I was charged the same as the thrashy one, plus the value of the restoration service. ]]>

^^Better use sealy the seal! I'd agree that it's ok if it says "repro" on it, but it has to be in a way that can't be passed as original by chipping off one part of it, and saying it's "slight damage". It would have to be nothing less than a watermark, or something like Spencer's old metalic foil repro SE labels.
The thing is, collectors and gamers aren't the majority of people that will be doin this. If just one person saw that Lil Samson was $100 this time last year, and notices it is $200 now...that one hellova markup and will spark interest, and nothing of interest stays a secret for long.

Somebody, if not many will capitolize on that alone the same way VGA did. How long has VGA even been up and running? I see a 2009 copyright at the bottom of their site, but can't seem to find a date when they were actually "established". Money for nothing.
