I am a programmer (Python, C/C++ and Assembly) and am interested in homebrew for classic consoles. I am also an active user on Sega-16 where there is a lot of SNES-bashing. However, over here it is the opposite. I however, am among the members for both forums that doesn't honestly care about CPU power as much as I do good games. SNES, Genesis, NES and SMS are among my favorite classic consoles of all time and I think arguing over 20 to 30-year old consoles is like beating a dead horse. Pretentious, and an astounding display of ignorance. The console wars should be buried by now. Each system caters to a different niche for me so I don't see why anyone would brag about CPU power on an old system. If you were to talk about CPU power from the late 80s/early 90s I'd simply give them an Amiga or Sharp X68K demo and laugh them out of the park. Yes, this right here. Thank you!

Masato Maegawa left Konami ("a big 3rd party for Nintendo") disappointed for his projects being refused, created a new business, and signed up a deal with Sega. Of course his business is now strictly related to the success of Genesis/MegaDrive. What he is supposed to say? Nintendo sales a better product?
I don't argue on his technical competences of course, but I think this hardly can be an unbiased opinion.

I'm not a fan of Nintendo or Sega, I had both companies consoles. I don't mind which one was better, whatever better could mean (to me, game concepts and playability are more important than graphics and hardware). And as someone else already said, I think it is a bit useless to argue today in this religious way about the potential performances of consoles from 20+ years ago.This holds true for either side involved. Being right or wrong, really means what?

Just my distract 2 cents.

Cheers!

Programmer- Dang this CPU is too slow.
Assistant- Maybe if you delete the pointless 500 NOPs in a row, it wouldn't be so slow?
Programmer- I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO OPTIMIZE MY CODE!!! ]]>

I agree.

@Aaendi
If you are in the mood to laugh a bit about it, there is a wonderful strip of Randall Munroe on the subject:
