Okay, I was able to set notifications when I receive a private message which helps a lot, but it seems I can only get notifications when someone quotes me? 

Also, how can I see topics I've created or posted in without just going line by line in the forums?

If you click on your name, it'll bring you to your profile page where you can pick Threads Started or Threads Posted In under the green More dropdown.

That works for other users too if you want to see theirs.
