Arch: I find mode B _much_ easier. The heavier ball makes the game quicker (less tedious to get a good score) but also the angles are a lot more favorable for hitting the various lanes. Also it's much easier to get the royal flush, just let the ball dribble off the upper flippers on either side. Getting it back upstairs is a simple trick too in mode B. ]]>

...But is there actually any way to do this?

You're probably right about the minor bouncing. If it ends up being a combination of position and uncontrollable differences in incoming incidence angle of the ball, then getting consistent precision shots every time is almost impossible.

It would seem like they basically completely failed to model rolling. ]]>

I also hate how light the ball seems-it just floats around the table without any weight. The lower table layout is pretty brutal too with that bumper in the lane right above the flippers.

The interesting thing about the NES Pinball game is that it doesn't seem like moves are 100% repeatable. There is some kind of random element, but I can't quite figure out how it works. For example, hitting the upper left ramp on the top table, or hitting the upper right exit on the lower table...I know EXACTLY where the ball needs to be on the flipper for both shots, but they only work 50 - 60% of the time. I suppose it's possible that the other 40-50% of the time I was missing the shot by one or two pixels, but I'm skeptical that was the issue.

I gave up after playing for an hour and a half, 17 games, I wasn't getting any better, one moment I do pretty good, the next game after really pathetically, back and forth, my scores drastically fluctuate from one game to the next.

01st try: Score 34.750
02nd try: Score 9.910
03rd try: Score 9.560
04th try: Score 28.980
05th try: Score 57.700
06th try: Score 71.590
07th try: Score 10.430
08th try: Score 103.110
09th try: Score 25.020
10th try: Score 33.040
11th try: Score 34.920
12th try: Score 41.750
13th try: Score 83.900
14th try: Score 25.730
15th try: Score 65.360
16th try: Score 79.480
17th try: Score 38.100

Now Rollerball, that one I managed to get up there in the high 2 mil, but then perhaps the point system is more too, I don't recall, but I actually enjoy that game regardless, plays a lot smoother than Nintendo's Pinball. Still, admittedly, I'm no pinball player, these are just not my kind of game.
